SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2014

“ Nanrugvedavineethasya naayajurvedadharinaha
Naasamavedavidushaha shakya Evam prabhaashithum
Nunam Vyakaranam Kruthsnam Anena bahudha srutham
Bahuvyaaharathaanena na Kinchidapashabditham”

We need brain and brawn to succeed in any endeavour. If one is brilliant yet is of weak stature he needs to depend on a healthy person to fulfil any of his tasks. Similarly a man of muscular strength needs to depend on an intelligent person for his suggestions. On the contrary if a person is both wise and strong yet is involved in prohibitive activities he is of no use to the society. The greatness of hanuman is that he is wise, strong and noble. He served Rama as a virtuous attendar. He was unmarried till the end and knew all the sastras. He was humble, loving and selfless. He was a gnani inall. “ Gnani cha Bharatharshabha”—When Madhusudhana Saraswathi wrote a commentary for Gita, for this phrase he picks up Aanjaneya swamy as an example.
Vali and Sugreeva were the sons of the vanara king Ruksharajas. They were united at the beginning. But due to the battle of Mayavi unforeseen circumstances split the brothers. Sugreeva surrendered to Vali. Still Vali did not forgive his blunder. He usurped his wealth and wife as well. He chased him away from the kingdom. As righteousness was on the side of Sugreeva Hanuman supported the latter and stayed with him, consoling him all the while.
Rama heard from kabanda about Sugreeva and came in search of him to the banks of the lake Pampa. At first Sugreeva suspected that it could be the spies sent by Vali to attack him. Hanuman met Rama, introduced himself and enquired about Rama. Rama was overwhelmed by Hanuman’s speech.. he praised Hanuman’s wisdom to lakshmana. “ See Lakshmana ,from Hanuman’s speech it is obvious that he is well versed in all the four Vedas and the 9 Vyakaranas. His speech is neither too fast nor too slow. His voice is neither too loud nor too soft. His sweet voice  captivates the heart of one and all. It is pregnant with the authority of the sastras and acceptable to one and all. It is devoid of a single absurd word. If even an enemy hears him he would surrender his heart to hanuman. He is fortunate who will have Hanuman as his messenger.”
The way Rama extols Hanuman proves how much rama would have admired Hanuman.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2014

                                                                           THIRUNINDRAVUR
There was once a merachant. He was very wealthy but very miserly. He never used to spare a single rupee for a good cause. His name was Dhanapal. He lived in Thirunindravur. His realatives despised him because he never did charity or helped them even during emergency. Nor did he enjoy any comforts for the fear of losing his wealth.
It is the nature of Lakshmi Devi to move frequently from one place to another. Hence she came to be called Chala. This is the reason why todays pauper becomes tomorrows millionare and vice versa. Danapal too turned poor. His realtives, spouse and children snatched away his wealth. Relatives respect only those who are wealthy. Wealth alone commands respect.  The poor are derided as foolish and stupid. The wealthy are extolled as wise. This is todays world. A miserable Dhanapal went to his purohit and mourned his grief. The purohit then recited a story.
Once upon a time Krishna worshipped Lakshmi along with his wife Sathyabhama. He questioned her “ Oh Lakshmi, Why do you not stay still at one place. Why do you keep moving from one person to another?”
She then said. “ I do not stay with the following persons:
1)      Those who do not do charity.
2)      Those who gamble, drink wine and kill animals.
3)      Those who go to prostitutes
4)      Those who lie at the court, misers, always angry
5)      Those who usurp others’ wealth, feel jealous of others
6)      Those who are proud of their wealth
7)      Those who are sadistic about others’ miseries
8)      Those who praise themselves
9)      Those who spend money on extravaganzas
10)   Those who are indifferent to cows, brahims and devas
11)   Those who are lazy, vicious, atheists, unenthusiastic
12)   Those who hate Gods and His devotees.
Krishna then asked her “ May you tell us where you wish to reside always?
I shall reside at
1)      Those places where service to sadhus  take place
2)      Those who are righteous
3)      Those who are generous and charitable
4)      Where there is Thulasi and Bilvam
5)      Where there is cleanliness
6)      Where lights are lit in the evening
7)      Where the ringing of the bells and conch is heard during the worship of Vishnu
8)      Where there is the chanting of the Vedas, slokas
9)      Where there is humility
10)   Where there is love
11)   Devoid of anger and jealousy
12)   Where nobody cries, or fights or ridicules.
The purohith recited this story and pointed to Dhanapal that lakshmi left him because he was a miser. Worship Vishnu at Thirunindravur and may you be bestowed with wealth again “ , said the purohith. Dhanapal began worshipping Lakhmi at Thirunindravur every Friday. He became wealthy again but this time he was sure to donate for many good causes. As Mahalakshmi chose to stay permanently at Thirunindravur the place came to be called “ Thiru” “ Nindravur”.

SLOKA OF THE MONTH- SEPT 2014

“ Rajarshi Deva Prathimou Thapasou Shamsithavrathou
Desham Katham Imam Prapthou Bhavanthou varavarninou
Srimanthou Rupasampanou Vrushabhasreshta vikramou
Hasthihasthopamabhujou Dyuthimanthou Nararshabou
Ubhou Yogyaavaham manye Rakshithum Pruthiveemimam
Sasaagaravanaam Kruthsnam Vindyameruvibhushithaam
Evam mam Paribhashantham Kasmaadvainabhibhashathaha”

After being a witness to Sabari’s liberation Sri Rama came to the Pampa lake. It was spring season. It was very beautiful. Rama was reminded of Seetha and began shedding tears.lakshmana consoled him and Rama too pacified Himself. He then said “ kabanda had informed us that Sugreeva resides here. Look out for hi,”. Sugreeva was perched exactly on the opposite peak.He began running, looking at Rama as he felt that they were sent by Vali.Hanuman stopped him and came towards Rama to enquire about him.
Hanuman came in the disguise of asanyasi. He came so as Sugreeva suspected rama. As soon as he saw rama at close quarters he understood that Rama was the supreme Almighty. A sanyasi should not prostrate a householder. He can only prostrate before God and his own guru who gave him the sanyasa deeksha. But hanuman fell at the feet of rama who was a gruhastha. It only shows that Hanuman knew Rama was God.
He then questioned Rama. “Are you Kings or sages or rajarishis? I feel you are kings. But why are you in the disguise of rishis? Why do you wear matted hair in the place of gem studded crwon? Why do you adorn a tulasi mala instead of precious jewels? Why do you sport the bark of a tree instead of a dazzling peethambar? But I feel whether you are in the palace or in the forest you are Sriman ( wealthy). Your wealth can never be separated from you. You both are capable of ruling the entire world. I have been talking all this while. Why are you standing in silence”, thus spake Aanjaneya. Rama was admiring his speech all this while.
