SLOKA FOR THE MONTH- SEPTEMBER 2011

“ Nahamarthaparo Devi Lokamavasthumuthsahe
Vidhdhi mam rishibhisthulyam Vimalam Dharmamasthitham”

There was a poet by name Barthruhari. He wrote Vairagya Shathakam. In it he says everything in this world creates only fear. As we enjoy material pleasures we are subject to diseases. Hence even as we indulge in material pleasure we are faced with the threat of Sickness. For an affluent person, he is faced with the threat of protecting all the money he has hoarded. Even the strongest man has the danger from an enemy stronger than him. For a beautiful woman she has the threat of old age which usurpes all beauty. For a talented person , he has the danger of he being won by yet another talented person. For even the most virtuous person on earth the people will talk only of his faults and not his virtues. Thus everything in this world produces fear and danger. Only vairagya ( detachment) gives happiness. But detachment is not hatred or dislike. Detachment towarards wordly pleasure is called vairagya.
Detachment brings wisdom. But how does one develop this vairagya. By the grace of God a true devotee begets vairagya. Ayodhya kandam describes Lord Rama’s vairagya. His thoughts were alwys on Dharma. Thus vairagya is inbuilt in him because of his mind bent towards dharma. This is the reson why he did not want to snatch away the wealth forsaking dharma. He tells Lakshmana” I don’t mind forsaking wealth but Iam not interested in attaining this wealth at the cost of dharma.”
Kaikeyi orders Rama to go into exile. His face did not droop. He was happy as ever. He was happy in the thought that he was following dharma. He said to kaikeyi” Iam not a greedy person. Iam equivalent to rishis. Iam contended following righteousness. Hence I accept exile happily. This is an instance proving his vairagya.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2011

THIRUPULIYUR
The Name of the Lord- mayapiran
The name of the Goddess- Porkodi
The name of the vimanam- Purushasukthavimanam
Saptharishis saw the Lord.

Once the saptharishis- Athri, Brugu,Vasishtar, Kuthsar, Gouthamar, Aangirasar, kashyapar did a yagam. They were the the wise ones who discovered the seven mantras of vyahruthi. They serve and pray for the welfare of humanity. In the kshetra of Puliyur there is a saras by name pragyasaras. The saptharishis did the yagam at the banks of this Pragyasaras for begetting pragya( wisdom).. They had a lot of cows and the cows used to graze nearby. One fine morning as they came out of the ashram to have a bath they spotted a tiger which came running towards the cows to eat them up. They began chasing the tiger with a stick in hand so as to save their cows. But the tiger had miraculous powers. It made the hands of the saptharishis actionless. They were dumbfounded. They began questioning the tiger “ Who are you in reality. How do you have such powers? “. The tiger atonce replied with respect “ We are tigers. We feed on cows. It is our dharma. But you rishis who should infact follow ahimsa are killing cows in your sacrifice so as to beget heaven. Don’t you feel that this is selfishness. The saptharishis replied “ Pasuyagam has been specified as a dharma in the Vedas. The cows too get punya by being sacrificed so. This is just as a doctor cures a patient by surgery using the knife. He does so only to cure and not to harm. The Tiger replied “ If surgery is not required the doctors cure patients by just giving medicines. The Lord gets pleased even by Purodasa ( flour) yagam. You need not kill cows for this. The saptharishis were awestruck “ Who are yopu in this form? Are you a Deva or rakshasa or a yaksha? Atonce the tiger roared and showed its real form. There stood the Lord with His conch and chakra. The saptharishis were overjopyed. They stopped the pasuyaga and completed the sacrifice by bagayagna. Thus those who worship the Lord in this kshetra get all the fruits of a yaga.
