SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2012
“Yadaacharathi kalyani Shubham Va yadi Vaashubham
Thadeva labhathe Bhadre Kartha Karmajamaathmanaha.”
Every jeevathma has to enjoy/suffer the fruit of his actions
either in this janma or in the next. Sometimes a very good man is born blind or
lame and suffers his entire lifetime. The vice versa also happens. A very rude
culprit enjoys happily all his life. All these are the result of ones
merit/demerits in his previous births. The other religions do not accept
rebirth. Thus it will only mean that all the sufferings are a result of the
Supreme Almighty. This will in return refer to the Lord as a prejudiced person.
However the fact is different. God has no likes or dislikes. He is beyond
everything. He loves all. Our sufferings are as a result of our own deeds
either in the present life or past. The Lord is not a reason for it. Srimad
Ramayan gives an example.
King Dasaratha goes for a hunt.
He had a missile by name Shabdavedi. It could strike the target without aiming
at it. It would attack the target just by following its sound. Dasaratha heard
a rumble. He thought it was of an animal. He directed the shabdavedi towards
it. Alas it was the noise of a 16 year old boy named Shravanakumara. He had
come to a pond to fetch water for his blind parents. The missile attaked him
and killed him. Dasaratha did it unknowingly. His parents mourned bitterly for
his death. “ You too will die of puthrashoka( separation from your son)” , thus
they cursed Dasaratha. Dasaratha felt miserable but then after the birth of
Rama he was pacified. Now Dasaratha tells Kousalya of this incident after his
separation from Rama. “ One begets what he does previously. As you sow so do
you reap”, says Dasaratha as he now feels the pangs of separation from Rama
after the latter’s exile.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2012
THERAZHUNDUR
Once there lived a king called Uparicharavasu. He was a
Dharmic ruler. He did a Purodasa Yaga worshipping Lord Vishnu. The Lord pleased by his yaga gave darshan to
him. He was surprised to see the Lord in person and shouted in joy. However the
sages performing the sacrifice there relented. They could not agree that the
king could see the Lord whereas they had not. Then the Lord spoke “Iam attained
only by those having devotion. I cannot be attained by Tapas, or Yoga marga. I
have given the king my darshan as he is full of loving devotion towards me. The
sages having heard this praised the king for his bhakthi. After the completion
of the yaga the Devas presented the king an aeroplane with which he could
travel anywhere around the world and attain success.
Once while travelling
in his vimana, he felt something pulling it. He came to the ground and was
stunned to see Lord Krishna grazing a cow. How come you are here Oh, Lord? Why
have you left the banks of Yamuna and why have you chosen the banks of Cauvery instead,
he asked. The Lord smiled and related to him an incident.
“ Once Lord Shiva
wanted to see me as little Krishna. He was meditating on my form when Parvathi
playfully closed his eyes. Angered by it he cursed her saying “ You are Vishnu
Maya. You , who close the eyes of one and all against wisdom are now trying to
close my eyes too. That which is devoid
of knowledge is a pashu (cow). May you become a cow. When the Lord showers his grace on you, you can rejoin me.”
Thus Parvathi became a cow at the banks of the river Cauvery and I looked after
her. Shiva too came here and had my darshan. With a fulfilled heart, my sister
Parvathi released from the curse went back to her loka. Now I stand before you
to show you my beautiful form.” Uparicharavasu was only too happy to build a
beautiful temple for the Lord Gosakhan- friend of the cow. Those who worship
this Lord will always beget victory in all their endeavour. The kshetra is
called Therazhundur because Uparicharavasu’s vimana was stuck here. The Lord is
called Aamaruviappan because he holds the cow close to him ( Aa- cow, maruvi-
hugging).

SLOKA OF THE MONTH- NOV 2012
“Thathra Sriyamivaachinthyaam Ramo
Daasaharathihi Priyaam
Eeshathsamlajjamaanam Tham
Ayodhyaaropayatha Plavam.”
“ Sahadharmachari thava”--- Valmiki quotes
the greatness of Sita Devi. Sita Devi
follows whatever dharma Sri Rama shows to the world. A chaste woman shares her
husband’s happiness as well as sorrow. She never leaves her husband whatsoever.
Sita says “ I shall follow the footsteps of that Savithri who brought back her
husband from the hands of Yama. Iam your devotee and a chaste woman. I know not
anything else other than Yourself. Thus saying she happily leaves to the
forest. Sri Rama takes care of her in such a way that she does not feel even an
inch of melancholy in the forest. He is to Sita not only a dear husband but a
dear friend, a revered Guru, a philosopher, a father and the best guide.
Sri Rama
crosses the Ganges and comes to the bank
of river Yamuna. He crossed the Ganges
with the help of Guha who brought his boat. The river is in spate. It looks
beautiful. Lakshmanaswamy builds a beautiful boat. He decorated it with many
colours. As soon as Sri Rama saw this he was really surprised. “ Lakshmana , I
don’t remember us learning to build boats at the ashram of vasishta. Where from
did you learn this? It looks really beautiful, saying so He climbed on to the
boat.” Sit down Sita” , he said. She touched the boat. The boat shook in the waters..
Devi feared. Sri Rama could have helped her climb onto the boat. However he
hesitated because of lakshamana. Lakshmana understood it perfectly. He turned
his head, as if looking at the opoosite bank. Rama atonce jumped down from the
boat, lifted Sita and helped her sit on the boat. Lakshmana rowed the boat. The one who felt
the happiest at that moment was Lakshmanaswamy.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2012
THIRUNINDRAVUR
Perumal----- Bhakthavathsala
Thayar-------Sudhavalli
Vimanam------Uthphala vimanam
Pushkaram---varunapushkaram
Once there lived a trader by name Dhanapal.
He was a very rich merchant. However he was very greedy and miserly. He never
donated even a paise for the poor and the needy. He never bothered about the
sufferings of the helpless. Nor did he spend his money for his own enjoyment,
for it would be spent. He always treasured his wealth more than his life.
It
is the nature of Lakshmi to keep moving
from one place to another. She never stays permanently at a single place. This is why today’s pauper turns tomorow’s
prince and vice versa. Poverty or prosperity is never permanent. Hence donate
and do dharma when you have money.
That
Danapala became very poor all of a sudden. His wife, sons, relatives and the
Government usurped all his wealth and left him penniless. He tried to start
various other businesses but failed in all his attempts. His relatives started
cursing him.
They alone are respected who are wealthy. They alone live happily who are
wealthy. A poor man is called a dull head and a wealthy man a wise one. Respect
comes from wealth. Hence Danapal, now poor lost all his respect. He approached
his purohit for advice. This purohith narrated a story.
Once Lord Krishna questioned lakshmi Devi : “ Why do always keep moving.
Why are you so unstable. Tell me the apt reasons.”
SriDevi smiled and replied :
I move away from the following persons:
1)
Those who are unrighteous and never donate.
2)
Those who gamble, drink wine, torture animals
and engage in prostitution.
3)
Those who lie in court
4)
Those who are greedy, angry and miserly
5)
Those who usurp others’ property
6)
Those who are envious of others.
7)
Those who enjoy others poverty
8)
Those who are proud of their wealth
9)
Those who praise themselves
10)
Those who spend lavishly
11)
Those who do not give to the deserving
12)
Those who are unrespectful to cows, Brahmins and
Gods
13)
Those who are lazy, non- believers of God and of
vicious character
14)
Those who hate devotees of the Lord.
The Lord then asks, “ where do you prefer to reside permanently?
She replies again . I stay at those houses where
1)
Sadhus are worshipped
2)
there is
righteousness
3)
There is charity at its best
4)
There is cleanliness
5)
Tulasi and bilva grow
6)
Lights are lit in the evenings
7)
Vishnu is worshipped with conch and bells
8)
There is Vedagosha, sound of stotras
9)
There is humility
10)
There is love
11)
There is no ridicule or crying.
Saying so the purohith said “ Dhanapal, you became poor only
because of your miserliness. Go and worship the Lord and His consort at
Thirunindravur and may you be bestowed with the lost wealth.”
The trader did so,
begot prosperity. This time he became wise He donated lots in charity. Thus those
who worship the Lord here will get back their prosperity. Lakshmi preffered to
stay permanently at this place since all were engaged in Dana and Dharma. Hene
this kshetra came to be called “ Thiru- Nindra- vur, the place where Lakshmi
preferred to stay once and for all.

The Rama Bhakthi of all characters in the
Ramayana is praiseworthy. So is Lakshmana swamy’s devotion to Rama. Sri Valmiki beautifully describes Lakshmana’s
virtuosity, vairagya, devotion to his father, love towards his brothers, valour
and much more. When Rama went to the forest Lakshmana followed suit so as to
serve him throughout the 14 year exile. This is enough proof for his devotion,
sacrificing mentality and righteousness.
Sri Rama entered a dense forest having left the citizens of
Ayodhya at the banks of river Thamasa and having blessed Guha. He stayed there
that night in the impenetrable, dark forest. That night he spoke to Lakshmana “
My Dearest lakshmana, May you go back to Ayodhya. You shall not suffer in this
opaque , thick forest region for 14 full years. My mother, Kousalya would be in
tears having parted from me. Go, console her and take good care of our father.
Coronate Bharatha.I shall return after my exile period is completed. Do not
grieve.” At once Lakshmana fell at the feet of Rama and sought his refuge. He
said “ Just as a fish dies as soon as it comes out of the waters so shall
Seetha Devi and me die without you. I do not wish to see father or mother or
Shatrugna without you. Infact I do not desire even Swarga without you.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH -OCTOBER 2012
THIRUMEIYAM
Once Indra was seated on the throne along
with Sachi Devi at Amaravathi. He was surrounded by all the other Devas,
kinnaras, Kimpurushas, apsaras, Gandharvas. Vishnu too was in that sabha. Just
then Sage Narada entered and praised Lord Vishnu with his sweet music. Indra
questioned Narada “ I have heard that
Truth is the greatest theertha
Truth is the greatest penance
Truth is the greatest merit
Tuth is the greatest vratha.
Those who lie even casually will beget
hell. Please tell me who at present in this world is a staunch follower of this
truth?
Narada said “ there is a hill by name
Sathyagiri ( Thirumeiyam) at the banks of Pushpabhadra river. There is a banyan
tree by name Bhadravatam and a stone by name Chakrashila. There a sage by name
Sathyamedas does penance. He is the most truthful of all.”
Having heard the words of Narada Vishnu and
Indra wanted to test the sage. Vishnu took the form of a varaha and Indra
disguised as a hunter came to the sage. The hunter came chasing the pig and the
pig sought the help of Sathyamedas. The sage in turn hid the pig in his own
ashrama. The hunter who came searching for it questioned sathyamedas “ Oh Dear
Sage Where is that pig which I have been chasing all along. Me and my family
have been starving for many days and that pig is my prey. Tell me where it is.
Did you see it” Sathyamedas was caught in a fix. If he said he didn’t know
about it, it would be a lie. And if he did tell out the truth the pig would be
killed by the hunter. He then diplomatically answered “ You ask me if I have seen the pig. Who is the
perceiver? What is to be perceived? What is meant by sight? May you understand
by thinking about these three truths.”
Having heard this wise yet true reply Vishnu
and Indra appeared in their original form. Looking at Sathyanarayana and Indra
the sage extolled the Lord beautifully “ Lord,You are the origin of truth,
repository of truth, path of truth, protector of Truth. Truth both in word and
conscience ( Rutham) are your eyes. One is truthful only when one acts as per
his conscience. Rutham is protected by sathyama and vice versa. As you are the
antharyami you know each person when he lies. By your maya the true athma looks
as if untrue and the untrue world looks as if true. May you show me the exact
truth. Those who speak nothing but the truth attain great peace and happiness.
Those who speak the truth are mostly silent and speak very less.”
The Lord highly please by His words blessed
him saying “ This hill will be named
after you and I shall show my presence here. Those who speak untruth
especially in the court will be punished by me duly. Those sinners who truly
repent will also be forgiven by me.”
Thus those devotees who truly realise their
folly and worship sathyanarayana swamyt at Sathyagiri will be relieved of their
sins.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2012
“ Na Hi Ramatpriyataro Mamaaasti

Asya prasaadadashamse Lokesmin

Dharmaavapthim ca vipulaamarthavaptim ca

In SriVaishnava sampradaya Guha is referred
to as Guhaperumal with respect. Sri Valmiki also says “ aathmasama sakha” which
means Guha is a parallel to Rama. Never can Guha match Rama in strength, nor
valour or beauty or wisdom or virtue or in his conviction for truth. Rama is
unparalleled. But Guha is an ardent devotee. This is why Valmiki referes to
Guha as equivalent to Rama. Bharatha comes running to have the darshan of Rama
along with his huge army. Guha was not a great warrior. Guha did not have a
huge battalion too. Guha looks at Bharatha approaching the place with his huge
army force. He first suspected that he was trying to wage a war against Rama in
the forest. Guha then decided “ If it be so then I would not allow Bharatha to
approach anywhere near Rama as long as I live “. This proves his devotion
towards Rama.
Sri Rama came
to the banks of river Ganga. He blessed Guha too. He stayed there at the banks
of river Ganga that night. Guha and Lakshmana spoke about the transcendental
virtues of Lord Rama. Guha said to Lakshaman “ I promise that I love none more
than Rama in this world. I wish to achieve praise, virtue, wealth etc by his
blessings alone. When the Lord rests with Seetha I shall protect him all night
along with my relatives.” This conversation clearly proves Guha’s devotion and
service mentality.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2012
THIRUKALVANOOR
There is a temple of Bhuvarahaswamy at the
banks of Nithyapushkarani at Tirukalvanur. There is a also a beautiful and huge Ashwaththa tree. The
Ashwatha tree is considered to be Lord Vishnu Himself and the punya done under
its shade attains effect immediately. If it is a Monday and Amavasa ( new moon
day) then special poojas are conducted under this tree. The married women are
sure to beget progeny by worshipping and circumambulating this tree.
There was a devoted woman in that village
who used to worship this tree everyday. She was Sumathi and her husband was
Durmathi. He fell into the hands of a prostitute and left Sumathi. He took to
all evil deeds. He drank, merried, thieved and this caused immense agony to
Sumathi. All she could do was only pray to the Lord Varahaswamy. One day a
brahmachari boy of 12 years suddenly appeared before her and said “ You will
beget a son like me”. Sumathi felt greatly consoled.
However Durmathi was caught by the police for having killed a miilionare
and usurping his property. He was arrested and Sumathi had no other way than to
run to the king. She begged for his release but the king refused. “ Dharmo
rakshati rakshitaha”. Your husband is a criminal and is accused of killing a
rich man. He who commits sin has to face its consequences.
Sumathi came back, all her efforts turning
futile. Weeping incessantly she ran to Varahaswamy who took the form of a Brahmin witness. “ Oh
King. I come from Kalvanur. My name is Bhuvarahachariar. My daughter is Sumathi and her husband is
Durmathi whom you have arrested. Durmathi is not the culprit by the prostitute.
It was she who killed the rich man for his riches and escaped quite easily
blaming Durmathi. Your Highness. May you introspect into this case deeply.” The
King noted down the convincing information provided by the witness and released
Durmathi. Durmathi turned into a noble man and soon by the blessings of
Varahaswamy and ashwatha vruksha pradakshina they begot a beautiful son.
Thus those who are in dire need of progeny
may worship the ahwatha vruksha and by the blessings of Varahaswamy are sure to
beget noble progeny.
