SLOKA OF THE MONTH- SEPT 2014
“ Rajarshi Deva Prathimou Thapasou Shamsithavrathou
Desham Katham Imam Prapthou Bhavanthou varavarninou
Srimanthou Rupasampanou Vrushabhasreshta vikramou
Hasthihasthopamabhujou Dyuthimanthou Nararshabou
Ubhou Yogyaavaham manye Rakshithum Pruthiveemimam
Sasaagaravanaam Kruthsnam Vindyameruvibhushithaam
Evam mam Paribhashantham Kasmaadvainabhibhashathaha”
After being a witness to Sabari’s liberation Sri Rama came
to the Pampa lake. It was spring season. It was very beautiful. Rama was
reminded of Seetha and began shedding tears.lakshmana consoled him and Rama too
pacified Himself. He then said “ kabanda had informed us that Sugreeva resides
here. Look out for hi,”. Sugreeva was perched exactly on the opposite peak.He
began running, looking at Rama as he felt that they were sent by Vali.Hanuman
stopped him and came towards Rama to enquire about him.
Hanuman came in
the disguise of asanyasi. He came so as Sugreeva suspected rama. As soon as he
saw rama at close quarters he understood that Rama was the supreme Almighty. A
sanyasi should not prostrate a householder. He can only prostrate before God and
his own guru who gave him the sanyasa deeksha. But hanuman fell at the feet of
rama who was a gruhastha. It only shows that Hanuman knew Rama was God.
He then questioned
Rama. “Are you Kings or sages or rajarishis? I feel you are kings. But why are
you in the disguise of rishis? Why do you wear matted hair in the place of gem
studded crwon? Why do you adorn a tulasi mala instead of precious jewels? Why do
you sport the bark of a tree instead of a dazzling peethambar? But I feel
whether you are in the palace or in the forest you are Sriman ( wealthy). Your
wealth can never be separated from you. You both are capable of ruling the
entire world. I have been talking all this while. Why are you standing in
silence”, thus spake Aanjaneya. Rama was admiring his speech all this while. UTHSAVAMS OF THE MONTH- SEP 2014

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2014
THIRUKKARAGAM
There is a kshetra by name Karagam near Kanchipuram. Once
upon a time King Ambarisha wanted to perform a yaga. He came to Kanchipuram to
perform the sacrifice. But his yagnapashu ( sacrificial animal) was lost. He
went to sage Rucheeka to ask for his son as a narapashu ( human sacrifice). The
sage refused to give his eldest son. The wife of the sage refused to give the
youngest and so the middle one by name Sunnashepa knew he was to be given. At
once he himself offered voluntarily to come to the sacrifice and give up his
life. On the way he met his uncle Sage
Vishwamithra. He pleaded the sage that
he suggest a solution such that Ambarisha would beget the fruits of the
sacrifice , whilst his life would also be saved. Vishwamithra pledged to save him
at the cost of the lives of his 100 sons. But all his 100 sons refused to give
up their lives. In anger Vishwamithra cursed him. He then discovered two
sukthas on Indra and Vishnu. He said to Sunasshepa “ While being tied to the
yupasthamba ( the pillar ) may you chant these two sukthas. You will be saved
by the compassionate Lord and the King too would be blessed with the fruits of
the sacrifice.
Sunnashepa did
so. Vishnu and Indra appeared before all of them. The Lord said to Sunasshepa “
Iam pleased by your righteousness and devotion to your parents. You are even
willing to give up your life for their sake.Pleased by tyour devotiobn I bestow
on you long life and at the same time King Ambarisha will get his desires
fulfilled. This too is because of your good virtues. May you ask for anything
that you want.”
Sunasshepa then
requested that the Lord stay in kanchipuram and bless all those who come for
his darshan with a long life and prosperity.
This Kshetra is known by the name Karagam and the Lord here
is called KARUNAKARAN.
