SLOKA OF THE MONTH - AUGUST 2011
Na Vanam GanthuKamasya Thyajathascha Vasundharam
Sarvalokaathigasyeva lakshyathe Chiththavikriya
Gnanis and Karma Yogis consider joy and sorrow equally. Joy, sorrow, prestige, censure, fortune, loss are allfor the body and not the soul. The soul is always Aanandaswarupi. They always concentrate on the soul and not the body. Hence a gnanyogi is able to perceive happiness as equivalent to sorrow. A karmayogi serves without expectation of fruits. Those who expect fruits only will expect profits. A karmayogi does not expect fruits, hence he is able to percieve fortune and loss equally.
Sri Rama considered joy and sorrow equally. Just the previos day Dasaratha called Rama and informed him that He will be coronated as Yuvaraja.Sri Rama was happy then. However there were no signs of He becoming excited by begetting this huge fortune. The very next day The coronation was cancelled. Dasratha called him and said’ The Coronation will not take place. I have given Kaikeyi 2 vows. You cannot earn on our own either. You have to go to the forest for 14 years. The fortune was lost and Rama had to face two huge problems of loss of fortune and life in the forest. Yet He was calm and happy as ever. He was not anxious, nor angry nor sad. He considered the joy of rajyalabham and the sorrow of vanavasam equally. He was highly virtuous and was intent on fulfilling His father’s promise. He was not keen on attaining the kingdom. “Be it whatever I shall not forsake Dharma” was Rama’s policy. Hence He was able to perceive joy and sorrow equally.
