SLOKA OF THE MONTH -JULY 2012
“ Suryasyapi Bhaveth Suryo Hyagneragnihi Prabhoh prabhuhu
Sriyasreescha Bhavedagrya Keerthya Keerthihi kshamakshama
Deivatham devathanam cha bhoothanam bhoothasathathamaha
Thasya ke hyagunaa devi vane vapyathava pure
Kushacheeradharam veeram gachantham aparajitham
Seethevanugata lakshmesthasya kim nama Durlabham”
In Srimad Bhagavatham while talking of Sri Ramaavathara sage
Suka says “ Marthyavatharasthviha Marthyasikshanam”- Sri Ramaavatharam is not
just for killing Ravana but to teach the humans a lesson in virtue. Swami Nammazhwar
too said “ Karpar Ramapiranai allal matrum karparao”—If one has to learn he
should do so from Rama. This is why in Ramaavathara he does not manifest His
divine prowess unlike in Krishnaavathara.
Still in some of the incidents like Ahalyamoksham, dhanurbhangam ( the
breaking of the bow), karadhooshanayudhdham, moolabala yudhdham, sethubandanam
his divine powers are exhibited. In the
whole of the Ramayana Rama is described as a complete dhramika and in very few
essential places He is described as the supreme Lord. Shabari, Tara, Mandodari,
Aanjaneya, Vishwamithra, Valmiki etc
extol Him as the Supreme Lord. Also Sumithra describes Him as the ultimate
Godhead in the above slokas as she was very wise.
Dasaratha wails as Rama leaves to the forest. Kousalya too cries.
Sumithra talks about Rama parathvam to Dasaratha and Kousalya. “ Sri Rama is
the Lord of all Lords. He is the sun admist all suns and fire admist all fury.
He is immortalised by His fame. Whether He is at home or at the forest he will
remain indestructible. Dont you ever think that he has been banished to the
forest and has lost the kingdom. That very fortune in the form of Seetha Devi
has gone behind him.” Hearing these consoling words of Sumithra Dasaratha is
pacified.
