SLOKA OF THE MONTH-- DEC 2013
SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2013
“ Athyanthasukhasamvrudaha Sukumaraha Sukhochithaha
Kathamthvapararathreshu Sarayumavagahathe
Thyakthva Rajyam cha Manam cha Bhogaamscha vividhan bahun
Thapasvi Niyathaharaha Shethe Sheethe Maheethale”
Throughout the Ayodhya kanda the unflinching love of all
citizens towards Rama and Rama’s steadfast love towards Dharama are shown. The
citizens of Ayodhya followed Rama to the forest because of their indisputable
love towards Him. Out of love for Rama Sita and Lakshmana followed Rama. Out of
love for Rama Dasaratha sacrificed even his life. All of them loved Rama. This
was because Rama followed Dharma. Out of all of them Bharatha was the best.
Hearing the news of Rama’s exile he wept profusely. He came to Chitrakoot and
asked Rama to accept the kingdom back. Rama consoled him and gave him his
paduka as Jeevanadhara ( as a substitute). He brought back those padukas (
sandals) to Nandhigram. He did not enjoy the materialstic pleasure. He lived
the life of an ascetic for 14 years.
Sri Rama left Chitrakoot and came to Panchavati. He lived in the hut
built by Lakshmana. Even when it was winter he went to have his morning bath in
the Godavari very early in the morning. Lakshmana came along. He once said to
Rama “ Bharatha has been brought up with all comforts all these years. He ought
to enjoy all the pleasures of a king. Yet he wears matted hair and the bark of
a tree. He sleeps on barren ground and lives the life of a sage. We are doing
so because we have been bound by the boon. He is not bound by any such boon”
praised Lakshmana. Rama was thrilled to hear such words. He said “ Tell me
more, tell me more about Bharatha. I feel happy listening about Bharatha.”

PROGRAM AT SINGAPORE
Sri Gurubhyo Namaha
Even as I was walking to the rostrum in my mind the scene of Lord Krishna dancing on Kalinga in river Yamuna was running. Such was the beautiful way Smt.Vishakaji visibly portrayed this scene to us with the help of her Sangeetha Guru’s composition and her own wonderful musical ability.
I am very happy to see the hall filled with people. I even see some people standing at the end of the hall. It is an indication of the pull of Bhagavan Krishna and the music of Smt.Vishakaji.
In our culture whenever music meets devotion the result is divinity. . Today for giving such a divine event let us thank Smt.Vishakaji.
Smt.Vishakaji not only brought these two dimensions viz., Music and Devotion, but she also brought a third dimension into play. That was the Sense of Humour. Whether it was the Thambaalam or young Krishna or indhaaththu Mama or whichever one, I am sure all of us enjoyed the humour she brought in.
She started off by expressing why it is Krishna Leela and not Krishna Katha, Krishna Charithra, biography or autobiography ….. She emotionally brought out the fact that inspite of the most challenging circumstances He had faced Krishna took His life as a Play. He was born in the middle of the night in a prison to parents who were in handcuffs. From then on he had faced so many challenges in his life. Still He took His life as a Play. Hence it is Krishna Leela. Smt. Vishakaji brought out this so beautifully.
Starting from that point there was a smooth river of Bhagavatham running through the two hours of Sangeetha Upanyasam. Upanyasam requires coherent thought and fluency of delivery. Sangeetham brings into play its own musical factors. She has demonstrated ability in both the domains so commendably, which we could feel over the past two hours. And what more she was able to seamlessly move from Upanyasam to Sangeetham and back to Upanyasam at will, with complete ease. I was sitting there in the audience enjoying it as if my own daughter was performing!
As the event was progressing a mental picture of this upanyasam was forming in my mind as if it was a wonderful big tree. This tree had dharma as its root. The trunk and branches
were nothing but Srimad Bhagavatham. Sangeetham represented the beautiful flowers that we enjoyed in this tree. Finally what is the fruit? Her Bhavam was the fruit. Yad bhavam tad bhavathi. Her “Bhavam” became our “Anubhavam”. For that let us give her a big applause.
This kind of an event would not be so pleasant and enjoyable but for the outstanding accompanying instrumentalists. The Artiste on violin and the Artiste on mridangam added colour to the whole event.
SIFAS should be thanked for providing such a beautiful hall with excellent facilities and for hosting this event.
Sri Krishna Premi Swamigal Sathsangam of Singapore need to be thanked on all your behalf for arranging this sangeetha upanyasam.

Program at Singapore was held by Sri Krishnapremi Swamigal Satsangh, from Dec 1st to 7th. Smt. Vishakha Hari began on 1st Dec at SIFAS auditorium. The sangeetha upanyasam was on Krishna leela. Sri Hari Anna delivered the lectures on Ekadasha skandam at Sivan temple, Geylang. RadhaKalyanam
was also conducted on Saturday and it was a grand conclusion.
The Conclusion Talk by V.Prabhakar Rao at the end of Smt. Vishaka Hariji’s “Sri Krishna Leela” – A Sangeetha Upanyasam at SIFAS (Singapore) on Dec 1st 2013 has been posted here.Sri Gurubhyo Namaha

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF DECEMBER 2013
The crab worshipping Shiva.- Karkateshwara.
Gangakarshanam- the well at the mutt
THIRIVISANALLUR
There is a shiva kshetra by name Thirivisanallur. There was
once a chola king who wanted to worship Lord Shiva there. He had informed the
archakar that he wanted to worship the Lord with thousand lotus flowers that
had grown in the lotus tank. The next morning as the archakar made all
arrangements for the king’s visit and opened the door of the sanctum sanctorium
he was shocked. That was because there were already thousand flowers on Shiva.
Who had worshipped Him? The king came there and to his utter dismay felt
cheated. He suspected that the archakar had did it. The latter pleaded that he
had not worshipped Lord Shiva and also said he would see who had done it. That
night he was awake and waited to see who was worshipping Shiva. Just then a
crab came through the Gomukha and placed
flowers on Shiva’s head one by one. As the archaka came to hit it the crab
climbed on to Lord Shiva’s head so that he could not hit it. Crab is called
Karkataha in Sanskrit. Hence Lord Shiva of Thirivisanallur came to be called
Karkateshwara.
Many famous scholars lived at Thirivisanallur. But of all
Sreedhara Iyyaval was the most famous saint. He was a contemporary of
Bodhendral. He did Nama Sidhdhantha. He was previously a minister at the court
of Mysore Maharaja. But he did not like his post. He preferred to be a sincere
devotee of Lord Shiva. Hence he came on a kshetradana ( pilgrimage) to Trichy.
He composed several works like Krishna Dwadashamanjari, Akhyashashti,
Dolanavarathnamalika etc. He settled at Thrivisanallur. Once a hungry orphan
begged him for food. Out of pity he gave food to him. But that was on the day
of his pithru shraadhdham. All the Brahmins of that village were annoyed at his
behaviour. They advised that Ganga snan
was the only solution to it. He went to his well and prayed that Ganges came to
his well. The river truly came to his well. This uthsava is celebrated as
Gangakarshanothsavam. Thousands of people come to this village on Kathika
Amavasa for Ganga snan ( at the well). Sreedara Iyyaval’s greatness is indescribable.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2013
“ Bhavagnena Kruthagyena Dharmagyena cha Lakshmana
Thvaya Puthrena Dharmathma Na Samvruththaha Pitha Mama”
Those who are service minded have service as the means and
end. They never fail to serve others for any reason. Devotees serve the Lord
always. If they attain Vaikunta they serve Paramapadanatha, else they serve the
Lord at Divyadeshas.
In the Avathara of Rama,
Lakshmana seems to have been really service minded. He served Rama at all
times, in all places and in all possible ways. He came along with Rama only to
serve him in the forest. In the forest he served Rama by
a)
Making a boat to cross the river
b)
Keeping a watch over the surroundings when Rama
slept
c)
Plucking fruits and vegetables for food
d)
Building a hermitage for Ram ato reside
e)
Massaging Rama’s feet
f)
Looking after Seetha if Rama went outside
g)
Pacifying Rama on his loss of Seetha
And more and more.
When Rama came to Panchavati, Lakshmana built
a beautiful ashram for him. Rama was overwhelmed by it. He said to Lakshmana “
You serve me knowing me well. You always do what is right. I can feel a
father’s love in all this. I feel as if father Dasaratha is taking care of me. Bharatha informed me at Chitrakoota that
father was dead. I was the most affected then. I felt I was there to look after
all of you, but I had no one to look after me.. Now I have no regrets. I feel
father has come in your form..” Thus saying Rama hugged Lakshmana with
pervasive love.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2013
NANDIPURAVINNAGARAM
There is no difference between Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu.
Those who perceive differences and speak ill of the Lords only project their
own jealousy. The devotees of Shiva who show prejudice against Vishnu and vice
versa cannot please either of the Lords. Just as a man- takes duty as an
officer in his office, as a father at home and as a pilgrim on a holy tour, the
lord is one. He takes several roles, as a creator, sustainer and destuctor. As
a creator He is known as Brahma. As one who protects the world He is called
Vishnu and as the destructor He is known as Shiva. These are but roles of one
and the same person. In order to show this to the world a divine sport took
place at Kailasa.
Lord
Shiva was discussing Brahma Vichara with the rishis at Kailasa. They started
discussing the origin of the world and the person who was the sole reason
behind the world. Just then Veda Vyasa entered the sadas.
He lifted both his hands and proclaimed “ I
can tell with authority that the Vedas are the most authentic shastras and Lord
Vishnu is the greatest of the Gods.” “ Narayana is Parabrahma.” Nandikeswara
was angered by these words. He felt it was an insult to Lord Shiva. He hence
paralysed the hands of Veda Vyasa. Shiva was inturn angered by the actions of
Nandi. He said “ Everyone knows that Nrayana is Parabrahma and I also accept
this statement. You have committed a sin by unnecessarilily paralysing Vyasa’s
hands. This only reflects your jealousy towards him. May you get out of
Kailasa”. Vyasa pleaded with Shiva “ nandi is your true devotee. Out of staunch
devotion he has committed the same. He is Dharmaswarupa. Lord Vishnu resides in
your heart and Syou reside in Vishnu’s heart. Those who do not know the essence
of the shastras do not know this too. I beg you to forgive him and take him
again to ypour feet.” Lord Shiva said “ Nandi, Go to Bhooloka, worship Lord
Vishnu there and get relieved of your sin.
You may then continue your service at Kailasa. Those who perceive
differences between me and Vishnu are indeed traitors.
Thus nandi came to a place near Kumbakona and cleansed himself of his
sin by worshipping SriNatha at the banks of river Manimuktha. Hence this place
came to be called Nandipuravinnagaram.

SLOKA OF THE MONTH- OCTOBER 2013
“ Thvayi Sathyam Cha Dharmascha Thvayi sarvam Prathishtitham
Thachcha Sarvam Mahabaho Shakyam Dharthum Jithendriyaihi
Thava Vashyendriyathvam cha Janami Shubhadarshana
Budhdirvairam Vina Hanthum Rakshasaan Dandakaasrithan.
Aparaadham vina Hanthum Lokaan Veera Na kamaye
Apyaham Jeevitham Jahyam Thvam Va Seethe SaLakshmanaam
Na thu Prathignam samsruthya Braahmanebhyo Viseshathaha”
SriDevi is the embodiment of compassion. She never leaves
the Lord even for a second. Her abode is
the bosom of the Lord. If we ask a person whether he has compassion, we do not
ask him whether his head has mercy, or his hands or legs possess pity. We only
say “ Doesnt your hear ever have compassion? The heart is the place for
compassion. SriDevi always resides in the Lord’s heart. Whenever he incarnates
she too comes along and shows the world the path of dharma. She came as Sita
during the Ramaavathara. She showed the world the meaning of chastity.
When
Rama went to the forest she too went along. When he entered Dandakaarnaya, the
sages surrendered at his feet and asked rama to protect them from Kara,
Dooshana and other rakshasas. Immediately Rama pledged to kill the rakshasas.
Seetha sid “ i do not think the rakshasas are at fault. Hence please do not
kill them. You are full of virtues like truth, righteousness, etc. The sages
have controlled their senses. They can tolerate anything.. I know how great a
person you are. The rakshasas have not troubled us at all. Hence it is
inappropriate to go for war with the rakshasa.
Rama did not get
angry hearing these words. He said , “ You are full of compassion. Hence the
blunder of the rakshasas is not felt by you. These rakshasas have eaten
hundreds of sages and tormented them. How could I be calm? The purpose of me
holding this Kodanda in hand is to protect the good and destroy the evil. Iam prepared
to even sacrifice my life, or even you and Lakshmana for the sake of the
sadhus. Never will I give up my oath to protect them”, he concluded.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2013
THIRUVAHEENDRAPURAM
There was a prajapathi by name Arishtanemi. He had two
wives, Vinatha and Kadru. The wives fought with each other regarding a horse by
name Uchaisravas which aarose out of the ksheerabdi. Vinatha argued that the
tail of the horse was white whereas Kadru said it was black in colour. The
silly argument turned wild. Kadru concluded that if it was white she would
become the slave of Vinatha else Vinatha should turn her slave. But Kadru
played foul game. She sent her sons, the black serpants and asked trhem to
cover the tail of the horse so that it looked black. Vinatha believed the tail
was really black and as promised she became Kadru’s slave. In due time two sons
were born to Vinatha. Her eldest son was Aruna, the charioteer of the Sun
whereas her younger son was none other than Garuda, the Lord’s divine carrier.
Garuda came to know of his mothers slavery. He begged Kadru to release her. But
Kadru releneted on the condition that he would bring her nectar from the
ksheerabdi.
Immediately Garuda proceeded to capture the pot of nectar. A
severe battle ensued between the Devas and Garuda. The Devas were defeated and
they inturn surrendered to the Lord. Lord Vishnu met Garuda on the way and
asked him to return the nectar. Garuda, now proud of having won over the
Devas refused to relent. He said “ I have
obtained this through my might and if you want it back may you fight with me. “
The Lord smiled and said “ Being the soul of every being I can easily win you
but I prefer your friendship to war.” Garuda was still adamant. “ Iam greater
than you and you very well know this. This is why you prefer my friendship,
being afraid of me. “ The Lord too said ‘ Yes. I accept that you are stronger
than me and Iam weak. That is exactly the eason why I would like to make
friendship with you. Saying so as an act of friendship the Lord threw one of
his arms around Garuda’s shoulder. Unable to bear the weight of a single arm
Garuda panted in exhaustion. He finally agreed that the Lord was the creator of
all. Yet he said “ My mother has been enslaved and this is why I need the nectar”.
The Lord told him “ Kadru had cheated your mother. The tail of the horse is
white in reality. Show it to her and your mother would be released free.
Gaaruda thanked the Lord for his advice and handed over the pot of nectar. The
Lord pleased with his love towards his mother said “ Ask any boon of me, My
dear”. Garuda said “ iam indeed jealous of your brain and brawn. I want to be
superior to you in might and fame. “ The Lord said “ may you be my carrier.
Thus it would be proven to the world that you bear Me ( my weight), who has all the world in
Himself. Also You can stay as as ymbol in my flag. That way you will be above
me” Garuda thanked Him profusely, freed his mother and came back to the Lord.
However he was filled with the guilt of having tested the Lord’s might. Hence
he came to Bhuloka, to Oshadiparvatha.
He made a lake from his beak It is called The Garuda river. He planted
Mruthasanjeevani on this hillock. Aadisehsa too created a well called
Amruthakupa. Garuda prayed to Lord Devanatha at the banks of this river. Those
who visit this kshetra will get rid of all diseases. Since this kshetra totally was conceived by adisesha it
came to be called Thiru aheendrapuram. The Lord is called Devanatha ( deiva nayagan). A Hayagriva swami sannidhi is also here. Swami Desika worshipped hayagriva and Garuda on this hillock.

SLOKA OF THE MONTH- SEPTEMBER 2013
“ Thvaamaasadya Mahaathmaanam Dharmagyam Dharmavathsalam
Arthithvaannatha Vakshyana Thachcha Naha kshanthumarhasi
Ehi Pashya shareerani muneenam Bhavithaathmanaam
Hathaanam Rakshasaidyouraihi Bahunam Bahudha Vane
Bhavathathamarthasidhyarthamaagathoaham Yadruchchaya
Thasya Meyam Vane Vaso BHavishyathi Mahapalaha”
Sharanagathi is surrendering of Manas, speech and body. Once
as refugee takes refuge he resolves that all his yogakshema would be
automatically taken care of by the Lord, He lives with the thought that the
Lord is His only refuge. Sharanaagathi is of two types a) Markata Sharanagathi
b) Maarjala Sharanagathi .Markata Sharangathi is where the baby monkey holds
its mother tightly. It never leaves its
mother. Likewise Prahlada and other devotees
catch the feet of the Lord with great faith and perseverance.
The other sharanagathi is Maarjala sharanaagathi where the mother cat
cups its kittens with its mouth. Likewise the Lord never leaves his devotees.
The Dandakavasis, rishis did Maarjala sharanagathi. They had innumerable
difficulties from Kara and Dushana at Janasthana since they ate human flesh.
The Rakshasas used to eat the maharishis who did penance there. They could have
burnt the rakshasas with their Thapobal. But they did not. Instead they waited
all along for Rama to come and save them. As soon as Rama came they praised him
“ We pray to you who are a Mahathma and
a Dharmathma as we are unable to bear our suffering. Please forgive us if we
are wrong. Did you see this place? Can you see the hill as white as Kailasa.
That is not a hill. It is a heap of flesh. Kara, Dooshana etc have killed all
the maharishis and heaped the flesh here. Please save us from them”.
Rama replied “ I have come here on my word given to my
father. If Iam of use to you here I consider it a privilege. I will not return
without killing the rakshasa and bestowing welfare on you all.”- thus he
resolved.
