SLOKA OF THE MONTH- SEPTEMBER 2013
“ Thvaamaasadya Mahaathmaanam Dharmagyam Dharmavathsalam
Arthithvaannatha Vakshyana Thachcha Naha kshanthumarhasi
Ehi Pashya shareerani muneenam Bhavithaathmanaam
Hathaanam Rakshasaidyouraihi Bahunam Bahudha Vane
Bhavathathamarthasidhyarthamaagathoaham Yadruchchaya
Thasya Meyam Vane Vaso BHavishyathi Mahapalaha”
Sharanagathi is surrendering of Manas, speech and body. Once
as refugee takes refuge he resolves that all his yogakshema would be
automatically taken care of by the Lord, He lives with the thought that the
Lord is His only refuge. Sharanaagathi is of two types a) Markata Sharanagathi
b) Maarjala Sharanagathi .Markata Sharangathi is where the baby monkey holds
its mother tightly. It never leaves its
mother. Likewise Prahlada and other devotees
catch the feet of the Lord with great faith and perseverance.
The other sharanagathi is Maarjala sharanaagathi where the mother cat
cups its kittens with its mouth. Likewise the Lord never leaves his devotees.
The Dandakavasis, rishis did Maarjala sharanagathi. They had innumerable
difficulties from Kara and Dushana at Janasthana since they ate human flesh.
The Rakshasas used to eat the maharishis who did penance there. They could have
burnt the rakshasas with their Thapobal. But they did not. Instead they waited
all along for Rama to come and save them. As soon as Rama came they praised him
“ We pray to you who are a Mahathma and
a Dharmathma as we are unable to bear our suffering. Please forgive us if we
are wrong. Did you see this place? Can you see the hill as white as Kailasa.
That is not a hill. It is a heap of flesh. Kara, Dooshana etc have killed all
the maharishis and heaped the flesh here. Please save us from them”.
Rama replied “ I have come here on my word given to my
father. If Iam of use to you here I consider it a privilege. I will not return
without killing the rakshasa and bestowing welfare on you all.”- thus he
resolved.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2013
THIRUTHEVANARTHOGAI
Once there was a huge assembly of all the Devas. Brahma,
Rudra, Indra, Vayu, Agni, Yama, Ashwinikumaras, Vishwedevas,, Maruths etc met
and discussed an important matter.
How do we see the Lord who is inaccessible to even Yogis. We
are all Aathikaarikapurushas, who work as per the Lord’s instructions. Still
the Lord is so inaccessible to even all of us. We are unable to go to
Paramapada. Only the Nithyasuris are able to worship him there. We can go to
Ksheerabdi, yet His Darshan cannot be guaranteed. Yogis see Him as Antharyami
in their heart. WE are unable to do so. Even monkeys and shepherds got His
Darshan. But that is possible only during His Vibhava Avatharas like Rama and
Krishna. We became Devas after performing very many great deeds for many
janmas. Yet what is the use if we cannot see the Lord? What is the way out.
Please tell us Brahmaji, requested the Devas.
Brahma replied “ I begot the Brahmapatta after 1000crore
yugas. The Darshan of the Lord is very difficult even for me. He is not visible
to those who perform deeds with desires. He gives His Darshan only for those
premabhakthas. We did not worship Him with Love but did so with selfish
motives. If we can worship Him with true Love He will bless us all with His
Darshan.
Lord Shiva said “ Hari is all pervading. Why cant you all
perceive Him thus.” Indra said “ We want to see Him with a form and Name.
Varuna said “ If that is the case we should give up all our desires and
mediatate upon Him. Ashwinikumaras said “
He is inaccessible to those who fall into maya, faithless, those who have
fallen from the path of yoga. Each of them gave their own suggestion and they
came to a conclusion that the Lord who come only if they worshipped Him with
true Love.
Immediately the Lord manifested His Magnificient form with
His divine conch and shell. He said “ You all have attained Swarga. You have
nectar. Still you are not free from troubles.. The Devas said “ Oh Lord We have
realised that your Darshan alone can free us from all miseries. We want to see
you always. If we, even Devas are full of worry what about the ordinary
mortals. Hence we request you to to stay here in this kshetra and give your
Darshan to all men and DEvas.
Hence the kshetra came to be called ThiruDevanarthogai.
Those who worship here will be freed from material desires.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF AUGUST 2013
“ Brahmalokam Na Gachchami Thvaamadhrushtva Priyaatithi
Thvayaham Purushavyaagra Dharmikena Mahaathmana
Samaagamya Gamishyami Thridivam Devasevitham
Akshayaa Narashaardula Maya Loka Jithaha Shubhaha
Braahmyascha Naakaprushtaascha Prathigruhneeshva Mamakaan
Evamuktho Naravyagraha Sarvashaastravishaaaradaha
Rishina Sharabhangena Raghavo Vaakyamabraveeth
Ahamevaaharishyami Sarvalokaan Mahamune”
If an act is done in anticipation of its fruits it does not
bestow on us a pure mind. It will on the other hand tie us in this samsaara. It
will give us only limited fruits. That is the reason why the Lord advised us
KarmaYoga. Karma Yoga is nothing but doing an act without expecting its fruits.
If we perform an act with the thought that it would please God, and if we
surrender its fruits to the Lord with the intention of service it is called
Karma Yoga. Thus he will not get tied up to Karma again and again. We take
medicines so that we may be relievd of it one day. Similarly we do karma so
that we may be relieved of it one day. This will give us chiththa shuddi,
wisdom, and ultimately liberation.
Srimad Ramayana gives us the example of Sage Sharabhangar. If we conduct yagas like Ashwamedha we can
attain swargam. If one follows brahmacharyam he can attain brahmaloka. It was
time for Sharbhangar to attain Swarga. Indra was waiting for him with his
vimana. But Rama was coming to meet him. Sharabhangar knew that Rama was God. Hence he
decided to surrender the fruits of his karma at the feet of Rama. If he went
with Indra to enjoy his karma he had to come back to samsara. Hence it was
better to make it karmayoga.
As soon as Rama
came to trhe ashram of Sharabhangar he
offered his karmaphala at His feet. Sri Rama accepted it. Hence he attained
liberation at the sannidhi of Sri Rama.

Vishnu thus sanctifies this place in 12 forms.
At the beginning of srishti 11 Rudras came from the forehead
of Brahma. They were very powerful but filled with thamoguna. Manyu, Manu,
Mahaneechan, Mahadevan, Shivan, Rudathdvajan, Ugrarethas, Bhavan, Kaalan, Vaamadevan and Druthavrathan were the 11
Rudras. They used to hit all beings from all sides. Brahma called them all and spoke to them “
You are all called Shankara. You have been created for the welfare of all
beings. May you all protect the cows May you all surrender at the feet of
Vishnu and get rid of your tamas.
Shiva came to Chozhadesha and specifically to
Thiruvenkaadu. He prayed to NaraNarayana there. Vishnu gave darshan to the 11
Ruidras. NaraNarayana made the 4 Vedas his 4 horses, made Omkara his chariot
and came there. Hence this kshetra is called ThenBadari. As the 11 Rudras
worshipped Vishnu the latter took
11forms separately. Hence it became Dwadashaksehtram. The foremost one
is ThiruNangur.
Those who take bath in this Rudrateertham will be relieved
of mental sickness. Those who cannot see North Badarikashrama can see the Lord
here.
