KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH- JANUARY 2014
THIRUVANPURUSHOTHAMAN
There are 12 divyadeshas around the place- Thiruvali
Thirunagari. Amongst these 12 divyadeshas is Thiruvanpurushothamam.
Once there lived a person named Vyagrapada in
Pundarikapuram. His son was Upamanyu. He was a very good natured boy. He was
admitted into Doumya’s patashala. Uththalakan and Vaidan studied along with
him. The Gurumatha gave milk only to her son. Upamanyu wished to drink milk. He
came back home and cried for milk. But
his mother consoled him saying they were very poor and could not afford to
drink milk. Upamanyu did not relent. He cried furiously. His mother not knowing
what to do said “ We are worshippers of Shiva. Only Shiva can give you milk.
There is huge cow lying before him. Go to him. He will give you milk”. Upamanyu
believing her words went to Lord Shiva at Brahmapuram ( Seerkazhi). He prayed
to Shiva with great faith.
Lord Shiva appeared before him and said “ Upamanyu, I know
your heart’s desire. But I cannot give you milk because my cow is really old. I
will take you to ksheerabdi, where there is lots of milk. “ Immediately he
showed the milky ocean to Upamanyu. Upamanyu drank milk from that ocean and his
mind became pure. Atonce Lord Vishnu gave his darshan. Then both Shiva and
Vishnu disappeared. Hence this theertha is known as ksheerabdi. Lord
Purushothama satnds on the banks of this theertha.
