SLOKA OF THE MONTH NOVEMBER 2011

Bharthuhu Kila Parithyagaha Nrushamsaha Kevalam Sthriyaha
Sa Bhavathya Na karthavyaha Manasaapi Vigarhithaha
Just like a devotee doing athmasamarpanam towards the Lord so does a pathivratha to her husband. Desire is born out of selfishness. Sacrifice is the foundation of love. A chaste lady sacrifices everything out of her love towards her husband. For example Daksha hated Siva. He performed a sacrifice out of hatred towards Siva. Realising this Daakshayani burnt her body of yogagni.. Her devotion towards Lord Siva is obviously portrayed at this juncture. Likewise kardama prajapathi married Devahuthi. He atonce began his penance. He did not even look at Devahuthi. Still Devahuthi ser ved him. She cleansed the place, decorated it with rangoli and protected his body from heat and cold. A chaste woman serves her husband even if he is characterless, or sick or penniless.SriRama tells Kousalya about sthree dharma. He goes to Vana. She cries out of the impending separation. She tells Rama “ Take me to that forest where you go. I cannot live without you. I will not disturb you in the forest.” Sri Rama atonce said “ A chaste woman prefers her husband to her son. It is not right on her part to go along with her son leaving her husband. The King will lament on my departure and his grief is inconceivable. It is at this time that you be beside him and console him. It is not right to leave him and come along with me.”

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF NOVEMBER 2011

THIRUNAVAI
Thirunavai is a kshetra on the banks of Bharathapuzhay (Pratheechi). Naavam refers to a boat. The Lord stands here as a boat to take us through the river of samsara. The Lord incarnated as Parashurama to destroy the wicked kshatriyas and after the completion of his work did penance at the Mahendra mountains. He toured through Kerala. The rishis at the banks of the river Pratheechi worshipped him and He preferred to stay there. It was then that Kamala, the consort of the Lord Narayana prayed to him to accept her as his wife in this avathara. But Parasurama said “ You were born of the Bhargava gothra previously. Now I have been born in the same gothra. So we cannot marry in this avathara as we both belong to the same gothra”. The Lordess said “ I was born of the bhargava class in someother incarnation, but Iam your consort at alltimes. You cannot show this reason, if you do so I will perform severe penance.” Saying so she began her penance at the banks of kamalalayam. Saraswathi and Parvathi served her during her penance. Once came an aged brahmana who questioned her on her penance. Knowing her wish to marry Parasurama he began speaking thus “ Alas ! What a choice. Parasurama of all, He is one who holds the parasu in his hand.He killed 21 generations of kings and is always found angry. Better choose a calm and beautiful groom for yourself.” An angry Kamala replied “ How dare you speak such words at Vishnu. He is patience personified. He is now born of the same Brugu class who struck at his chest with his leg. Doesnt this show His good traits” She atonce prepared to leave when the aged Brahmin disappeared atonce and showed His form as Narayana. “ It is not apt for me to marry you as Parasurama but I shall wed you in my original form as Narayana”. Thus the Lord married Kamala and stands in the kshetra of Thirunavai blessing us todate.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH - OCTOBER 2011

Dharmo Hi Paramo Loke Dharme Sathyam Prathishtitham
Dharmasamsrithamethathcha Pithurvachanamuththamam

The Lord takes avatharas for the sake of establishing dharma. Dharma will never be destroyed. The Lord will not allow dharma to be destroyed. Whenever Dharma declines the Lord takes the form of a fish or a tortoise or a varaha and re-establishes dharma. In the Ramaavathara He follwed dharma to its fullest extent. He showed the potency of truth. There isn’t a single virtue that He did not exhibit in His Avathar.
Sri Rama went to the forest happily. He had he happiness of having fulfilled His father’s wish. He was happy that he followed the principles of truth and dharma. But Lakshmana was sad that Rama had to go to exile. Hence he said to Rama “ kaikeyi has cheated Dasaratha. Dasaratha has given the boons having been deceived by her. This is not dharma at all. This is not truth. Hence you need not go to the forest. You can be coronated king and can rule the kingdom.” Rama replied at once ‘ You speak these words out of affection towards me. You can realize the depths of dharama if you think deeply. Kaikeyi has not deceived Dasaratha. It was Dasaratha who said “ I promise on Rama. Ask anything you need.” The Ikshavaku rulers never go back on their words. Dasaratha has followd truth all his life. Hence it is our duty to keep him truthful all his life by following his words.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF OCTOBER 2011

THIRUVARANVILAI
SESHASANAN- NAME OF PERUMAL
PADMASANI- NAME OF THAYAR
VAMANA VIMANAM- VIMANAM
VYASA THEERTHAM- NAME OF THE THEERTHAM
NAMMAZHWAR MANGALASHASANAM

Parasara Bhagavan was wedded to Vasavi at the third part of Dwaparayugam. Vyasar was born to them. Vyasa lived at the banks of the river Saraswathi at the ashram by name Samyaprasam. He divided the Vedas and taught them to his disciples. He wrote the Mahabharatham because womenfolk and those of the fourth caste cannot recite the Vedas. He wrote the Brahma sutras too. Still his mind was not at peace. He felt that all the shastras did not talk of the glory of Lord vasudeva to the fullest extent. Narada came there at that time and consoled him through many songs on the Lord. Vyasar then wrote Srimad Bhagavatham. It was at this time that Lord Rudra came out of the agnikunda as SriSuka. He was being brought up by Vyasa Himself along with other disciples. Sri Suka was always contemplating on the Lord. He was interested only in renunciation and not in the house-holder’s life. Vyasa sent him to Janaka to be tested if he was fit for renunciation. He ran into the forest in ecstacy. Vyasa ran behind him calling him all the while. Sukar showed his shadow as if it was Suka and attained Vishnupada through the akashamaraga. Vyasa was affected by putra shoka. He came to Thiruvaranvilai. There he did the aradhana of Narayana on Seshasanam. He said “ Oh Lord I have written Srimad Bhagavatham to enjoy your gunas and wanted a son to preach it. “ Immediately the Lord spoke “ Those who worship me here will not have puthrashoka. Suka will come back to you. You may go back to your ashram at Samyaprasam.” Thus Vyasar returned to His ashram. Sri Suka had the sakshathkaram of the Lord.. The Lord sent him back so that the people may be enlightened. “ Go back to bhooloka. You have been born here to recite the Bhagavatham and preach it to the world,” said the Lord. Sukar went back to Vyasar., learnt Bhagavatham from him and gave it to the world. Thus the Lord at Thiruvaranvilai was worshipped by Sage Vyasa himself.
