SHLOKA OF THE MONTH MAY 2009

Soumithre Bhunkshva bhogamsthvam ishtan rajyaphalani cha

Jeevitham chaapi rajyam cha thvadartham abhikaamaye.”

The Lord is an ocean of mercy. In Srimad Bhagavatham in the episode of Ambarisha the Lord says “ My abode- Vaikunta or my spouse- Sri Devi or My uthsavams I sport only to delight my devotees.” He loves His devotees. His devotees too know nothing but Him. Each one of Sri Rama’s devotees are Adarsha purushas ( ideal devotees). Their devotion is praise worthy. They are ready to sacrifice anything for His sake. Of all of them Lakshmana is the greatest. Rama left for the forest. Lakshmana immediately followed suit. He did not think of his abode, nor of Urmila his wife, nor of his own pleasure, nor of his parents. Rama was his sole refuge. He did not part from Rama all his life. Service to Rama was his sole objective.

Dasharatha announced Sri Rama’s pattabhishekam. He informed Sri Rama too. Immediately Rama hugged Lakshmana to his bosom and said the following words:

“ In the Ikshvaku race it is the tradition to crown the eldest as king. So has our father arranged for my coronation. I have also hence given my consent. But Lakshmana though I will be crowned King you will rule the entire Ayodhya samrajya. This kingdom is yours. Iam myself yours.” This episode highlights Sri Rama’s unparalleled love for Lakshmana.

Thus the day’s events were from morning 6.00 to evening 6.30. For Krishna leela the pravachanam was in two parts –morning 9.45 to 12 and again in the eveing from 4.45 to 6.30. It was very well arranged with great sincerity.

He traveled to every village, every city to spread the awareness of the Divine name.He gave the rama nama to everyone. His birth was almost a hundred years after Bodendral. He visited Govindapuram and discovered the then hidden adishtanam of Bodendral by the power of his Ramanama upasana. He is the aparavatharam of ramaavatharam. His mutt now exists at Marudanallur. It is near Kumbakonam. His shishya parampara now occupy the peetam. Whoever come in this parampara is referred to as Sadguruswamigal. The Sadguru swamigal at present blessed HariAnna on the occasion of his Acharyaabhishegam. On April 2nd at Sadguru swamigal mutt during the Ramanavami uthsavam Sri Hari Anna and Vishakha manni gave lectures on Rama nama mahima and Ramajananam respectively. It was fully charged with devotion as it was filled with the sanctity of Sadguru Swamigal. Sri Hari Anna said: “ It is Sadguru Swamigal who showed Bodendral to the present world. KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH MAY 2009

SRI RANGAM PART IV

RANGA GITA (continues)

SriRanganathar then continues :

“I shall now tell you the Poojapaddathi to worship me.

1) Prabodanam:One should get up early in the morning chanting my divine names. With a pure heart and clear mind as the cuckoos coo and the cool breeze blows he has to conduct the morning prabhodana.

“ Kadiravan guna disai”- the azhwar recites as ordered by the Lord. Even today the Lord is awakened with veena nadam, a horse, elephant and cow wait before the King of all Kings- Rangaraja. A king is supposed to be awakened with all these mangala dravayas.

1) Neivedyam: Then he should go on to give me milk, fruitsetc. He should do so with utmost love and not as an ordeal duty. Thyagaraja Swami says “Aragimpave”. Nadadur Ammal , a great devotee of Kanchi Varadan on one day offered to the Lord milk as usual. After the offering when he happened to look at the milk there was a dirt floating on it. He was horrored and begged the Lord’s forgiveness. The Lord consoled him thus: “ Oh Nadadur ammal, worry not. If this dust remains in your pot of milk may you note that I have not consumed it. I have partaken the clear milk and your blemishless heart.” Thus should a devotee offer his food with devotion.

2) Thirumanjanam: As does a mother bathe her child so should the priest conduct my Divine Bath. They should with sincerity perform my abhishekam with milk, curd, panchamrutham, sugarcane juice, honey etc.Every abhisheka has its own phalasruthi ( fruits). If honey is poured on the Lord the offerer gets a sweet voice.

3) Flowers and other offerings: He then has to drees me up with clean garments, beautiful ornaments, flowers, sandal paste. Periyazhwar, Koorathazhwar, Ananthazhawr, Tondaradipodi azhwar offered flowers to the Lord.

Those who enter my garbagruha will not enter garbavasa.

Those who offer grains so that the poor may feed at the temple will be blessed with prosperity for generations together. Those who see my kalyanauthsavams will get their heirs married soon. Thus they will be blessed with all prosperity and peace.

SHLOKA OF THE MONTH APRIL 2009

Kamam kalu satham vruththe bratha the bharathaha sthithaha

Jyeshtanuvarthi dharmathma sanukroshaha jithendriyaha

In the Gita The Lord says “ May you treat happiness and sorrow alike.” The wise realize that grief and joy, praise and censure, gain and loss are factors affecting the body alone and not the soul. They practice that they are not the gross body but the subtler soul. Thus a gnanayogi is able to treat sorrow and happiness at the same level. Thoe a Karma yogi as he gets involved in an activity he disassociates himself as the doer. Thus he does not suffer from ego nor does he expect the fruits of his action. He is satiated by the very act of dharma and expects nothing else. Hence he too is able to maintain an equilibrium between joy and grief. The best epitome of this is Sri Ram. He was able to reflect the joy of kingsmenship and the grief of exile ( vanavasam) as equal emotions.

Dasharatha beckoned Rama to inform him about his coronation the very next day. Sri Rama was cheerful and silent. But He was still down to earth unmoved by excitement. Dasharatha was great at mind reading. Yet he stood ignorant of Sri Rama’s depth of emotions. “12 years have passed by. Bharatha has all along lived at his maternal uncle’s house at Kekaya kingdom. Why is this coronation now arranged without him? thus may Rama think” ponders Dasaratha. He hence extols the virtues of Bharatha. Bharatha is a knower of all dharamas. He is a follower of the elders. He very well knows that only the eldest begets the throne in the ikshvakuvamsha. He loves Rama. He is a destroyer of the senses.

Whatever Dasharatha says as above we can observe in Bharatha. “ Jyeshtanuvarthi dharmathma”- As soon as Bharatha comes back from Kekaya desham he says” Am I such a greedy person so as to usurp the throne of Rama? I will surrender to Rama and stay at His feet.” Bharatha also sacrificed everything and came to Rama’s lotus feet.

“Sanukroshaha”- A Lover of Rama. Often Bharatha used to say “ Sri Rama is so innocent. He might easily get cheated.

“ Jithendriyaha”- Bharatha led a life of asceticism. He wore knotted hair, and the bark of the tree stayed at Nandigrama for 14 fullyears, sacrificing material pleasures and leading a life of an ascetic. This shows his non-indulgence.

EVENTS OF THE MONTH FEB 2009

VISHNU PURANA PRAVACHNAM MADURAIAT AASRAMAM
PRAVACHNAM
UNCHAVARTHY
WITH PATASAALA STUDENTS
DIVYANAMAM

Akhila Bharatha Sadhu Sangam of Madurai conducted Hari Anna’s pravachanam from Feb 2nd to 7th at madanagopalaswamy temple. Sri Hari anna rendered lectures on Vishnu Puranam. He made references to Azhagar in every day’s pravachanam. The very first upakyanam of Vishnu Puranam is Amruthamathanam. “Parameshwarar partook poison and became halasyasundarar. Madurai is the abode of Sundareswarar. It is called Sundareswarakshetram. Thirumohur is close to this kshetra. Thirumohur is referred to as Mohanakshetram. Legends say that the Mohini avathram took place at that kshetra” said Hari anna. Sri Sukar in Srimad Bhagavatham says Narada imparted the Dwadashakshari mantra to Dhruva.Sri Parasharar in Vishnupuranam quotes that the saptharishis imparted wisdom to Dhruva. “If the lord wishes to liberate a soul he first gives satsangha, which in turn fetches him gurukrupa and finally the feet of the lord. Thus the Lord gave Dhruva satsangha in the form of saptharishis and Narada as his Guru” declared Sri Hari Anna.

It is the responsibility of the Guru to make his disciple steadfast in athmagnana.. This is brought out in Ribu upakyanam. Vishnu puranam concludes with nama mahima. The dharma of krutha yuga is Tapas, the dharma of Thretha yuga is yaga, the dharma of dwaparayuga is pooja and the yuga dharma of kaliyuga is Nama sankeethanam. Simple yet powerful instrument to attain the Lord is nama sankeerthanam. The pravachanam was conducted at the temple precincts hence it was full of sanctity.. the audience was full and listened in great rapture. On Feb 7th there was Unchavruthi, Divyanamam and Radhakalyanam. A memorable event to cherish indeed.

II SRI KRISHNALEELA PRAVACHNAM PALAKKADU

On behalf of Kerala Sabha, Palakkad Sri Hari Anna’s pravachanam was conducted from Feb 17th to 22nd, for 6 days at the premises of Moien’s Higher Secondary school. The event was Krishna leela pravachanam. The school ground was filled with rasikas. In the past years Sri Hari Anna has given lectures on Srimad Ramayanam and Srimad Bhagavatham. On Feb 22nd Sri Hari Anna came to Parali. All the devotees of parali gave a grand reception right from the outskirts of the village. Parali is a small serene village. Here unchavruthi was conducted for almost one and a half hours. It was heart warming to see every devotee at each and every house showering so much of love and affection on Sri Hari Anna. At the end of the unchavruthi there was a pravachanam on Ambarisha Charitram at a Ganesha temple there. Sri Hari Anna said: “ Karou Harermandira marjanadishu- There is always a heavy crowd at the temple of Guruvayur. One should not get tired of seeing such crowds, since we, laymen cannot go to Ksheerabdi, nor can we perceive the Almighty in our heart as yogis do, nor can we visualize in person the deities such as Thyagaraja swami did. Thus Guruvayurappan is our sole refuge.” The

Parali devtees unwillingly showed Hari Anna a farewell. They longed for more.

III SRIMAD BHAGAVATA PRAVACHNAM SINGAPORE

Sri Hari Anna’s Bhagavatha pravachanam was held from Feb 25th to March 2nd at Singapore Waterloo street Krishna temple. This Bhagavatha pravachana series began in 2003. Every year he dealt the Bhagavatham in detail for seven full years. This was the seventh year ( incidentally Parikshit heard for 7days). This year the series was concluded with Ekadasa skandam and Dwadasa skandam. Howmuchever in detail the lectures are still Singapore audience untiringly listen to them with deep devotion. They are good rasikas. The very first day Sri Hari Anna exclaimed “The earth is strided by the Lord in the past in His Trivikrama Avathar. Thus all regions of the world are touched by the Lotus feet of the Lord. It is sanctified by His divine feet. It is precisely because of this that several temples have been constructed and deities have been worshipped all over the world constantly.” Every day the pravachanam was followed by Dolothsavam. All the devotees were assembled even for the dolothsavam. They sang beautifully in chorus. There was Divyanama sankeerthanam on one day. Suddenly there was a severe rainfall on one of the days. Even then there was a huge crowd gathered for the lecture. Sri Hari Anna immediately responded this gesture in his pravachanam. He said “ Singapore audience are big competitors to Parikshit. It is refreshing for us to speak only if such an appreciative audience lies before us.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH APRIL 2009

SRI RANGAM PART V

RANGA GITA

Sri Ranganatha continues : “Lakhs of families earn their livelihood with my temple as their means”. Besides their earning they get immense peace of mind as they attribute their service to me. Faith in me can perform the most unimaginable miracles. It can even cure the most incurable disease in the world. I assume the form of archa for the sake of my devotees. Iam decked with jewels and I am celebrated in various uthsavams for the bliss of my devotees. My temple is a feast for all my devotees. It is joy for their eyes, ears, nose, mouth, tongue and mind. This is not just sensual pleasure however, as Iam involved it alleviates maya.

As the Lord says in the Ranga Gita even today Srirangam is always filled with uthsavams as follows:

1) Thai uthsavam in the month of Jan-Feb

2) Masi theppothsavam ( Feb- Mar)

3) Panguni Serthi uthsavam ( Mar- April)

4) Chitra thirunal- Brahmothsavam ( April- May)

5) Vaikashi vasanthothsavam ( May- June)

6) Poochaththu uthsavam

7) Jyeshtabhishekam ( July-Aug)

8) Pavithrothsavam

9) Navarathri uthsavam- Purattasi ( Sep-Oct)

10) Iyppasi Dolothsavam ( Oct- Nov)

11) Thirukarthikka uthsavam ( Nov-Dec)

12) Adhyanothsavam- Rapaththu, pagal paththu ( Dec- Jan)

13) Vaikunta Ekadesi uthsavam

Thus the whole year is filled with uthsavams. Here one might be a little speculative. Whereas in other religions places of worship are always calm and serene, in Hindu religion why is there pomp and show, noise and jubiliation? Sri Anna answers: In the Hindu Dharma temples are not meant for meditation, but for celebration. Meditative atmosphere is readily available in forest caves. Those who can control their mind and sense organs can very well do so at their very homes. People throng to the temples because they are unable to control their senses. The Lord says “ Come Oh Devotees, to me. If you are unable to control your eyes worry not, let them be free to see Me adorned with jewels and lustrous garments. Let them see me in different vahanas ( vehicles) in procession. If your nose asks for fragrance let them smell my tulasi garlands and incense sticks. If your ears throng for pleasant sounds let them hear songs in praise of me.. Thus the same senses which push us down to maya can be redirected towards the Lord to win over it. This is the master plan of the All Knowing Master.

To be continued.
