KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF SEPTEMBER 2011

THIRUPULIYUR
The Name of the Lord- mayapiran
The name of the Goddess- Porkodi
The name of the vimanam- Purushasukthavimanam
Saptharishis saw the Lord.

Once the saptharishis- Athri, Brugu,Vasishtar, Kuthsar, Gouthamar, Aangirasar, kashyapar did a yagam. They were the the wise ones who discovered the seven mantras of vyahruthi. They serve and pray for the welfare of humanity. In the kshetra of Puliyur there is a saras by name pragyasaras. The saptharishis did the yagam at the banks of this Pragyasaras for begetting pragya( wisdom).. They had a lot of cows and the cows used to graze nearby. One fine morning as they came out of the ashram to have a bath they spotted a tiger which came running towards the cows to eat them up. They began chasing the tiger with a stick in hand so as to save their cows. But the tiger had miraculous powers. It made the hands of the saptharishis actionless. They were dumbfounded. They began questioning the tiger “ Who are you in reality. How do you have such powers? “. The tiger atonce replied with respect “ We are tigers. We feed on cows. It is our dharma. But you rishis who should infact follow ahimsa are killing cows in your sacrifice so as to beget heaven. Don’t you feel that this is selfishness. The saptharishis replied “ Pasuyagam has been specified as a dharma in the Vedas. The cows too get punya by being sacrificed so. This is just as a doctor cures a patient by surgery using the knife. He does so only to cure and not to harm. The Tiger replied “ If surgery is not required the doctors cure patients by just giving medicines. The Lord gets pleased even by Purodasa ( flour) yagam. You need not kill cows for this. The saptharishis were awestruck “ Who are yopu in this form? Are you a Deva or rakshasa or a yaksha? Atonce the tiger roared and showed its real form. There stood the Lord with His conch and chakra. The saptharishis were overjopyed. They stopped the pasuyaga and completed the sacrifice by bagayagna. Thus those who worship the Lord in this kshetra get all the fruits of a yaga.
