SLOKA FOR THE MONTH-MAY 2012

Yavatha Chitrakootasya Naraha Srungaanyave Kshathe

Kalyaanani Samadhatte na pape kuruthe manaha

The world is filled with nations of different sizes, cultures and traditions. But nowhere in the world can we see a nation like India. India is a repository of sacred temples and rivers. The kshetra mahathmyam of Srirangam says if a man passes by Srirangam even on his official visit all his sins are lost when he comes out of Srirangam. So is Chitrakoota. It is beautiful hilltop. Mandakini flows gently through it. Its greenery and serenity is overwhelming. Maharishis do penance there. Sri Rama built an ashram waiting for Bharatha at Chitrakoota. Chitrakootam was very pleasing to Rama. In this sloka Valmiki explains Chitrakoota’s beauty. The hill at Chitrakoota is called Kamadagiri. Kamadagiri means that which grants all the wishes. One who sees the top of this hill attains all prosperity and he never indulges in any kind of sin.

SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2012

Aanrushasyamanukroshaha Shrutham sheelam Damah Kshamaha

Raghavam Shobhayantyete Shadgunaha purusharshabham

Sri Rama’s gunas are infinite. All the devotees get immersed in His virtues. On hearing His transcendental virtues one gets more and more devoted to Rama. Also one begets mental peace. We also can learn from his virtues and set up higher standards for ourselves. Out of his very many virtues Valmiki gives a list of some of them in this sloka.

SriRama incarnated to show the greatness of Sathya ( Truth). He went into exile for the purpose of truth. He would go to any extreme for the purpose of sathya. This was what Dasaratha told Kaikeyi precisely, “ baadamithyeva vakshyathi” “ If I tell Him you will not be coronated King. I have given Kaikeyi boons. In order to keep them up you have to go to the forest, he will immediately follow my orders.” Such was his importance for truth. Sri Rama never liked hypocrisy.

Sri Rama was ocean of compassion. He showered His grace irrespective of whoever it was. Be it rakshasa like Vibheeshana or monkeys like Sugriva or a bear like Jambavan or a bird like Jatayu or men ( citizens of Ayodhya), his compassion was always unlimited. It was without prejudice. .Ahalya’s life was spoilt by Indra. Vishwamithra brought Rama to her ashram. He saved her from the curse by the dust of His feet. He respected her like Kousalya and thus fell at her feet. Ahalya trembled and extolled Him. Ahalya moksham shows that Rama never looked into others’ mistakes. He only showed compassion, compassion and nothing but compassion.

Sri Rama was a learned man and a controller of senses. He had controlled His mind. When Rama entered Dandakaranya forest Valmiki says “ This Dandakaranya is a dense forest full of man eating rakshas and animals. Yet Rama enters this forest. He is a controller of his senses for sure.( Aathmavan)

Straightforwardness, compassion, indepth knowledge, good character, control of his senses, control of mind –these six qualities make Rama shine beyond excellence.

KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2012

VARAGUNAMANGAI

Perumal: Vijayasanar

Thayar: Varagunavalli

Vimanam: Vijayakotivimanam

Pushkarani: Devapushkarani

Prathyaksham: For Agni

Once there lived a king called Vishwasakan on the banks of the river Cauvery at Dharmapuri. He was a great devotee of Vishnu. The king was truthful, generous and virtuous. One day suddenly Sage Sanathkumara appeared before him. The king warmly welcomed him and questioned him thus. “ Oh Great sage. Iam highly fortunate that you have come to me to bless me. I have heard that a merit ( a punya) done at a punyakshetra gets a hundred fold. Which kshetra is it? I want to do danam ( generously donate) to deserving people at that kshetra. It is said that a punya done at at a punyakala ( apt time) , at a punya desha( apt place), to a deserving person begets its fruit immediately.”

Immediately Sanathkumara said “ There is a kshetra near SriVaikuntam on the banks of river Tambraparni. It is known by the name Varagunamangai. There was a fisherman there. His only aim was to have a good catch of fish. He was incompassionate towards them. One day as he was sitting on the banks of the river a snake bit him and he died instantly. His body lay there in the forest and was food to eagles. Still the Devas from Devaloka took him there. I was stunned at this. What had he achieved to be taken in a divyavimana, I wondered. The Devas clarified to me that this fisherman had done annadanam at this kshetra. Still I wondered how this could be possible because he was an incompassionate sinful fisherman. The Devas showed his body being eaten by eagles. This itself was indirectly an annadanam. If it could be considered as annadanam though the danam was done by a sinner of his sinful body to an undeserving bird, because of the punya kshetra, then what to talk of a deserving meritorious person donating pure food to a deserving person! Hence go to varagunamangai and liberally donate.” Thus advised by Sanathkumara the king went to Varagunamangai and established an agraharam there. There he donated to the sadhus food, clothes, gold and money. Pleased by the meritorious deeds of king Vishwasakan Vijyasanan, the Lord appeared before him. The King extolled Him and built a beautiful temple for the Lord. The Lord blessed him too.

A Pandyaking too worshipped the Lord here for begetting a son and was blessed with a virtuous male child. Hence he named the child Varagunapandyan. VaragunaPandyan inturn also served the Lord. Hence the name of the kshetra—varagunamangai. Those who worship the Lord here will beget valorous and good children like Varagunapandya.
