KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH- FEBRUARY 2012

NACHCHIAR KOVIL

Once upon a time a sage by name Medhatithi performed penance at the banks of Manimuktha river.. His wish was that Mahalakshmi, the mother of the world who was born to Brugu and Janaka must be born to him too. He wanted to have the Lord as His son- in-law. His wish was fulfilled. Mahalakshmi, the Goddess manifested Herself as a child on a lotus amidst the pond. He took the child and named her Vanjulavalli. As she was the mother of all, everything that is beautiful in nature could be seen in her. She sang like a cuckoo, danced like a peacock, spoke like a parrot and walked like a swan.. She had eyes of a deer, thighs like that of an elephant’s trunk, waist like that of a lion, eyes like that of a fish, hair like that of a blackbee, eyebrows like creepers, peral like teeth, moon like forehead, lightening like body, complexion like that of gold. She was always happy and made others happy too.. Now she attained marriageable age. Medathithi arranged for a swayamvara of all the Lords of various divyadeshams, for indeed she was not an ordinary woman. SriRangaraja, Venkataraja, Varadaraja, sundararaja, Sharngaraja, Padmanabha and many more of the deities came for the swayamvara. Vanjulavalli prepared herself to choose her Lord. It was then that Thirunarauyur Nambi ( Srinivasa) flew upon Garuda and came to her. ( Hence nachiar kovil is famous for its Kal garudan). She aptly chose Him and Medhathithi did the kannikadanam. Brahma was the purohit and and the Devas worshipped the diyadampathi together. Medathithi extolled the Lord. Those who worship srinivasa in this kshetra will have their wishes fulfilled.

Use Capital letters and Sanskrit pronunciation (optional) and either write in full english or in full tamil. Otherwise, very informative.
