SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF APRIL 2013
Ramagamanamaakankshan Bharatho Brathruvathsalaha
Brathurvachanakaari cha Prathizhaapaaragasthatha
Paaduke thvabhishichyaatha Nandigraameavasaththada
Sa Vaalavyajanam Chathram Dharayamasa sa svayam
A devotee thinks of the Lord more in separation than in
union. He cries to be re-united with him. Devotion grows more and more during
times of separation. When Krishna left the gopis all of a sudden during raasam
the Gopis cried and sang the “ Gopika Geetham”. The Lord did not come. They
cried and wept profusely. Still the Lord did not come. They could withstand no
more and the Lord stood before them. Sri Suka gives the way to the Lord’s
darshan through the episode of Rasa leela.
In
Srimad Ramayana all devotees are ideal
characters. The pangs of separation is shown through the characters of
Sita and Vharatha. Sita awaited Lord Rama for 10 full months at Ashoka vana ,
expexting him, crying for him, like an ascetic. Also Rama left her at the ashram
of Valmiki even as she was pregnant. There too she sufferef sepation. Likewise
Bharatha for full 12 years craved to see Rama. He came back to Ayodhya after 12
years but als Ram ahad left. Bharatha cried all his way to Chitrakoot. He
requested Rama to accept the kingdom. Rama consoled him and gave his Paduka (
sandals) instead. Bharatha came back with Rama’s paduka to Ayodhya. He
coronated the Paduka. He did the chatra,
chamara upachara too to the sandals themselves. He considered himself as a
citizen of the Paduka Samrajya. He did not however want to live there without
Rama. Hence he went to Nandigrama. All through the perIod of 14 years he
aanticipated Sri Rama’ s arrival. He spent the entire time thinking of Rama. If
he ever wanted to see Rama he would hug the sandals and cry his heart out. Rama
then came in his dreams and consoled him.
