SLOKA FOR THE MONTH OF JULY 2014
“ Ya Gathiryagnasheelanam Aahithagnescha ya gathihi
Aparaavarthinaam Yaa cha Yaa cha Bhumipradaayinaam
Maya Thvam Samanugnaathaha Gachcha Lokaananuththamaan
Grudraraaja Mahaasathva Samskruthascha Maya Vraja.”
In the Vishnu
Purana the word “ Bhagavan” has 6
charactersitics as per Parasara. Those are a) Sarveshwar- the leader of allb)
Dharmaathma—follower of virtues 3) keerthimaan—a celebrity d) Sriyapathi- The
Lord of Sri 5) Viraktha- a detached person 6) Vaikuntapathi- the Lord of
Vaikunta, giver of moksha.
We can see these 6 virtues in Lord Sri Rama. a) In Jatayu
moksha we see that Rama can give moksha. Though Rama cries in separation from
Seetha like an ordinary mortal, he gives liberation to Jatayu as He is the
Supreme Lord.
Rama sees jatayu with his wings cut, lying on his death bed.
He puts Jatayu on his lap and asks him “ Where is my beloved Seetha?” Jatayu
with paternal affection says “ Aayushman! Your Seetha and my life have been
taken away by Ravana in the muhurtham of Vinda. You will beget her back and
attain all prosperity. He could not speak any further. Jatayu with his head on
Rama’s lap attained the feet of Rama seeing Rama.
Sri Rama performed
his final rites. He then said “ That Heaven which is attained by
Nithyaagnihothris, that heaven which is attained by generous philanthrophers,
that heaven which is attained by the courageous warriors at the battle field
will be attained by you. Rama further wanted to give Jatayu Vaikunta. Hence he
says “ One cannot get vaikunta by good merits alone. No shastra gives the rules
for performing the funeral rites for a mere bird.. hence I give you moksha by
my own mercy. It is my order. May you attain mukthi.
Jatayu attained
kramamukthi staying at the lokas then and there. This shows Rama’s
Sarveshwarathvam, His mokshapradathvam,His
compassion, Jatayu’s devotion and affection.
