KSHETRA FOR THE MONTH OF MARCH 2013
PULLAMBHUTHAMKUDI
There was a prajapathi by name Arishtanemi He had two wives.
They were Vinatha and Kadru. Vinatha gave birth to Arunan and Garuda. Kadru’s
children were the snakes. Arunan’s sons were Sampathi and Jatayu. Arunan was
the charioteer of the Sun God. Jatayu and Sampathi wanted to see their father
and flew up in the skies. Jatayu could
not bear the heat. Sampathi protected him with his wings. Unfortunately
Sampathi’s wings burnt in the heat and he fainted. He fell on top of the
Vindhya ranges. Jatayu fell into the forests of dandakaaranya.. A sage by name
Nishakara said Sampath’s wings would grow again if he served Rama by his
speech. It was then that Ravana abducted Seetha. Jatayu fought a fierce battle with Ravana but
alas he chopped of Jatayu’s wings with his sword by name Chandrahaasa. Rama went in search of Sita. He saw Jatayu
dying. Yet Jatayu held his breath to bless Rama. He said “ My Dear Rama. Dont
you worry. You will get back your lost Sita and the kingdom too. He died on the
divine lap of the Lord. Then Rama did Brahmameda samskara for Jatayu. After
this incident Sugriva sakhya took place. In gratitude towards Rama for having
won him back the Kishkinda Rajya Sugriva sent a huge army of vanaras in search
of Sita. Hanuman gave Rama the news of Sita’s finding. He started towards Lanka. When he crossed the river Cauvery he thought of Jatayu and wanted to a
full fledged Sraddham. ( Anna sraadhdham). He thought of Sita for one needs his
wife for the pithrukaarya. Sita came out from his Vakshasthala and cooked the
food for the sraadham. Rama rested for a while there. That place became a punyakshetra. It was called pakshiBhuthapuram alias
PullamBhuthangkudi. It is near Kumbakonam at the banks of river Cauvery. It is
equivalent to Gaya. Those who do
sraadham( rituals for ancestors) here will beget progeny by
Rama’s grace.
